From Txu to the plains of Plano there’s a lot going on in the world of Texas energy. If you live here and you want to teach your kids about being greener citizens we think recycling is a great place to start – here are a few of the ways to get your kids involved.
Have them Sort: Kids love organizational tasks, believe it or not, so get separate buckets for paper, glass, and plastic recycling. They’ll love sorting out the trash and putting things where they need to go.
Get Cash for Cans: Taking cans to a recycling center isn’t exactly a cash cow but the few cents they’ll get back will be cherished by your kids. Help them bag up the cans and teach them the value of a dollar at the same time!
Garden: Plant a vegetable garden in the backyard and show your kids the value of composting. They’ll be recycling and growing healthy alternatives to fast food at the same time – this solution is double duty and will serve them for the rest of their lives.

We all love the world we live in. It is a pretty great place. Some places definitely need more help than other, but if we work together we will be able to make a difference. There are numerous environmental charities to choose from. A quick search should bring up many local charities that we can help out. Whether it be with money or service.

One of the easiest things we can do to help out our environment is to recycle. All of the charities will encourage us to do this. Having a recycling bin in our homes and offices will make it easy for us to do our part for the environment. Another great thing we can do is carpool, and walk or ride a bike whenever it is possible. It saves us money and it saves the environment.

There are always charities looking for volunteers to help with the environmental efforts. That could include anything from clean ups, to educating others about what can be done to reduce our carbon foot prints. There are so many opportunities for service with environmental charities.

Get out there and see what you can do to help. We all have to live here!

Have you ever wondered what to do with that old MP3 player that you haven’t touched in four years? Someone less fortunate might want to buy it or might appreciate a donation. A lot of our old junk sits around or gets tossed in the garbage when it could be put to better use through recycling and donating. There are all kinds of recycling and there are multiple ways to put old working or non-working appliances to good use.

Most cities and towns are required by law to recycle.Additional information can be found at http://blog.sustainablecities.net/2011/08/16/the-reality-of-recycling/. There are laws limiting what they can throw in a landfill and they can be heavily fined for dumping the wrong items. A Google search online such as, “recycle DVD player” will bring you to national and local sites that can point you in the right direction for proper disposal in your local municipality.

Another option is to maintain appliances in good working order and hold onto them for as long as possible. We need to change the mindset of a society that likes to keep buying new things. If you can get another few years out of that old refrigerator or washing machine, do it, you will be doing our planet a huge favor in the process.

Childhood is an impressionable time which makes it the perfect stage of life to get into the habit of recycling and respecting the environment! Here are some eco-friendly ideas to try with your kids:

1. Put a box for recycling beside the main trash can in your house. Help your child glue examples of what can go in the box on the outside of it (a sheet of paper, flattened pop cans, etc.)

2. In warmer months dry clothes outside and make sure to grab something for your kid to stand on so they can lend a hand. Later in the day they might find that the damp clothing makes a fun little playground!

3. Set up a compost bin in your backyard and have your children help maintain it. Planting a vegetable garden could also be fun for them.

4. Take a walk around the neighborhood. Bring a trash bag and gloves to pick up any litter you might see along the way.

5. Before throwing away items (toys, clothing) that are damaged or worn out think about ways you can repair them or turn them into something new. Also, don-t hesitate to take un-used items to a charity!

Learning to recycle is a great way for families to spend quality time together and along with reducing consumption and reusing materials, recycling helps a family lessen their impact on the environment. Try some of the following tips to make recycling an easy and enjoyable part of your family-s life.

1) Do it Now, not Later. It may be tempting to toss all of your recyclables into one bin with the intention of coming back to them later in the week. However, the most successful home-recycling systems are integrated into everyday home life. This means taking a few extra seconds to wash and sort recyclables immediately after you use them.

2) Simply the Process. Make recycling as easy as possible and you can be sure that you and your family will do it. Have separate containers for each type of material and keep those containers next to the garbage bin.

3) Get Everyone on Board. Like any project, everyone must commit in order for recycling to work. Make recycling a family event ” have a challenge to see who can recycle the most, keep count of who washes the most containers and find other ways to make recycling a fun family activity.

Recycling can seem complicated, but in reality it is a fun and easy way to bring the family together ” and help the environment!
